THE PLAYING SURFACE
Traditionnally, pool tables build using natural quarried slate as opposed to synthetic materials make for a better more accurate game.
THE SLATE
Natural quarried slate is formed from compressed layers of sediment rock containing mostly chlorite, mica and quartz that have settled and hardened over hundreds of thousands of years. Slate is cut, ground and polished to a perfectly flat surface. Natural slate can be found in different parts of the world including Italy, Brazil, China and India.
Due to its excessive density and weight, it is quite costly to transport. Billiard slate is often three-quarters of an inch to one inch thick (1.9 cm to 2.54 cm) weighs between 400 and 600 lbs (181.4 kg to 272.1 kg). The slate is often manufactured in three pieces to make it easier to transport, less prone to break and easier carry for installations. It's carved to have round edges around the pockets. Holes are drilled along the edges, in order for the slate to be screwed and/or bolted to the top of the table frame.
Tables of lesser quality may sometimes have playing surfaces made of other synthetic materials such as; Slatron, Permaslate ( Hard, synthetic materials or sheets of plastic layered over particle-board or Honeycomb sheets. These usually do not offer a good, stable, sturdy or well levelled playing surface, and may also be more subject to distortion with time, temperature and humidity.
